Helsinki Nightlife | Joanna Laajisto

You may recall Helsinki based interior architect and designer, Joanna Laajisto from her work at Story restaurant in Old Market Hall or for her Edit Lamp design featured here. This week we feature Laajisto’s latest project that takes focus on  design for those looking for a more refined Helsinki nightlife. Not a fan of nightclubs herself, the designer has created a place where only ‘grown ups’ are allowed – and you can guarantee that you won’t wake up in the morning having lost your voice from shouting all night.

Opening its doors just two weeks ago, Le’Roy has been designed by Laajisto to feel more like a grand apartment with different rooms to hang out in as opposed to resembling a strobe light, doof-doof music, pick up joint for Midori drinking high school leavers and uni students. As fun as it was at the time we can safely, and thankfully, say those days are well behind us.

Sitting above the recently opened Michel restaurant, also designed by Laajisto, Le’Roy is a welcome addition to the Helsinki nightlife for those with a more discerning style when it comes to hitting the town. Dark and moody in comparison to the light, fresh palette of white tiled walls, leather seating and sage green painted timber details used in the 1940′s kiosk inspired restaurant below, the stunning ‘disco ball’ glass light that greets guests at the top of the stairs certainly sets the tone for an otherworldly experience after dark.

Wanting to focus the design of the space around the stunning original windows on both sides of the building, Laajisto clad the walls in panels painted in varying grey tones to effectively create a sophisticated and classic aesthetic to compliment the building designed by architect K.A. Wrede in 1892. Custom made green velvet fabric was specified for the Max Alto sofas, black marble and brass for the bars and lighting designed by Niclas Hoflin for Rubn custom fitted to the space.

This is the nightclub for our generation wouldn’t you agree?
